In Germany the number of older people is continually increasing due to low birth rates and an increasing life expectancy. By the year 2010 the proportion of over 45-year-olds in the workforce will have increased from a third today to around half. This much discussed demographic trend is countered by the modern myth of young, flexible and single employees.
Even though many businesses have recognized the problem of a foreseeable scarcity of skilled labour, no age-specific concepts of employment have been developed so far, nor have fundamental changes taken place in terms of attitudes towards age.
The development partnership “Generations – Berlin integriert Erfahrung” (Generations – Berlin Integrates Experience) is developing and testing measures and models to maintain and use the potentials of older people in eight individual projects, working towards solutions that actively confront this issue.
Our offers range from health care for older employees to developing new areas and forms of employment in particular domains (housing, health, tourism) of private enterprise and the Third Sector .
We place particular importance on activating the knowledge and experience of older people and on using forms of intergenerational learning.
One of the outstanding projects is the establishment of a regional centre for management and transfer “Berlin integriert Erfahrung” as an information platform and a tool for counselling.
“Generations” is coordinated by the Berliner Verband für Arbeit und Ausbildung bvaa (Berlin Federation for Employment and Training).
"Generations" is cofinanced by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour with funds from the European Social Funds (Community Initiative EQUAL).
