Aims and activities:
The Local Tourism Project which is based on a non-profit local economic approach and on the wealth of Berlin-Kreuzberg’s cultural diversity aims at developing tourism services as employment opportunities for the jobless.

Formerly unemployed people who are now working in state-funded employment programmes are trained in the Regenbogenfabrik’s hostel, canteen, bicycle repair workshop and children’s studio. The current organisational structures and service delivery in these sub-departments is to be professionalized. New services like guided walks and bicycle tours, cultural tourism activities/ packages for children, youths and adult guests will be explored, developed and tested.

The Local Tourism Project targets at unemployed local residents of all generations with different qualification levels (low-skilled as well as highly qualified, even academics) and from different ethnic backgrounds or origins. Training is predominantly based on „learning on the job“ with experienced co-workers as trainers. In addition, participants are offered courses and workshops on tourism-related subjects like foreign languages, knowledge of the town, tourist guiding, marketing, computer skills, and book-keeping.

The Local Tourism Project contributes to three objectives of the DP Generations:
  • exploration of employment opportunities for elder workers in the tourism sector;
  • testing and documentation of different combinations/forms of paid and unpaid work (employment in a third sector organisation on the basis of an mix from market income and state subsidies plus independent, free lance, voluntary work);
  • development and testing of concepts and methods of realizing the transfer of knowledge between generations.
